Packet #28

Visual and Verbal Memory

When visual information is processed in our brains, we examine details and derive important information. Sometimes, this information is stored temporarily during a task in our working memory. Other times they are practiced and rehearsed to remain ingrained in our long-term memory. In this worksheet, we provide you with 4 exercises that target visual and verbal memory. Our goal was to help your patient see how they use visual and verbal memory skills daily in life skills such as grocery shopping and clothes shopping.

If you like this packet, try bridging workbook #1 which is about the cognitive skills required for grocery shopping. Additionally, try our digital program to strengthen the skills used in this packet.

This packet will be great to use one-on-one with your client or in group therapy sessions. It is well suitable for children aged 8+ and adults.

Included inside: 18 worksheets and bridging questions.

Does your patient struggle to memorize and focus on comprehending visual information? This packet will test and engage your patient’s visual memory and attention skills. In this packet, your patient will start with a simple chunking exercise, where they must remember the shapes on the grid. Once completed, your patient’s attention skills will be next for stimulation. They will have to pay attention to details as they figure out which item doesn’t belong and find the one icon in a mess of different icons in the private eye exercise. After that, they will have to carefully count the number of ladybugs found on the pages in a print version of catch the ladybug. This version of Catch the Ladybug will challenge their memory and attention. Lastly, the packet will challenge them to recall designs on a shield from memory in Heraldry.

Included inside: 31 worksheets and bridging questions.

The digital exercises that inspired this worksheet

Chunking

Highly visual, this exercise targets your client’s ability to remember the objects they have seen and their location in space. Paying attention to the features of the objects presented and their location engages the hippocampus, frontal lobe, and both the ventral and visual processing pathways.

Restaurant

Many situations in real-life demand the correct pairing of information to an individual’s identity, like remembering which healthcare provider corresponds to which specialty. Other situations these skills are important are for when someone has guests over and one guest has an allergy or a preference for a food item. Using attention, working memory, and name recognition, your client will learn to create meaningful associations with multiple pieces of information.

Around the World in 80 Trips

In this exercise, your client must correctly pair images of landmarks with their corresponding locations in the correct order. Your client must also pay attention to the order of their tour, which involves the frontal lobe. By learning strategies to effectively retain and execute verbal and visual information, your client will engage key brain regions and their interwoven connections with one another in this fun exercise.

Heraldry

Like a coat of arms, the colors, symbols, and arrangement of visual stimuli all have meaning. For example, recognizing a stop light requires a person to remember the meaning of the colors, and know where to look to find the current traffic signal. Another example of deriving meaning from the attributes of visual stimuli includes identifying medication by pill description. In this exercise, your client will see a coat of arms and be asked to reconstruct it as accurately as they can.
