Packet #37

Verbal Reasoning

Are you looking for verbal reasoning activities? Then look no further. Verbal reasoning is how we can understand complex sentences. As you read, your brain breaks apart the complexity into smaller and easy-to-digest. This packet is filled with exercises that may help to improve verbal reasoning skills.

The first exercise is based on the digital exercise, Hurray for Change. In this exercise, you must correctly sequence letters, words, and numbers alphabetically and numerically. We put this exercise first to help warm up your brain, as you will use these skills later in the packet. After this exercise, you will have three other verbal reasoning activities. We hope this packet will help you learn strategies to think critically by using the given information, process information effectively, and then take affirmative action.

This packet will be great for kids 8+, individuals who have had a stroke, or individuals who have aphasia. Additionally, individuals with executive functioning deficits, trouble processing verbal information, or anyone who wants to challenge their verbal reasoning skills may enjoy these activities as well.

Included inside: 22 worksheets and bridging questions.

Other times they are practiced and rehearsed to remain ingrained in our long-term memory. In this worksheet, we provide you with 4 exercises that target visual and verbal memory. Our goal was to help your patient see how they use visual and verbal memory skills daily in life skills such as grocery shopping and clothes shopping.

A Decipher puzzle is waiting for them with a little break from math. They will return to a math exercise, but this one will have some logical reasoning as they have to determine the numerical value of a shape in the Shape Math exercise. The last two activities are simple. The first will challenge their visual-spatial ability by determining the rotation direction of a group of gears. The last exercise will stimulate their verbal language and ability to categorize random words in a Secret Files exercise. The digital exercises that inspired this worksheet

Secret Files

This exercise primarily targets concentration, working memory, and executive functioning skills. These cognitive skills are heavily used when we are problem solving. Because your client must use some degree of trial and error, they must remember which attempts were successful as well as which ones were not. They must then devise strategies that help them remember the category of each drawer and what words correspond to each category. We use these skills when we have to organize items in our home in a way that makes them accessible to us and presentable.

Embroidery

Can you scan a space for relevant information? Using visual scanning and verbal memory, look at a matrix of random letters to find a hidden word pertaining to a theme. This can be done timed or untimed.

This Story is Full of Blanks!

Using context clues given in text, your client must complete a passage by correctly filling in the blanks with the right words. In situations where we encounter ambiguities, we must use knowledge we have at present in order to solve problems. Examples of situations where using context clues is important for problem solving include “reading a room” of people and reading a text where one may encounter unfamiliar words.

Hurray for Change

Switching between tasks is a very important skill to have. In the real-world, we switch between tasks when we are conversing with friends and participating in an activity. In this exercise, your client will have to correctly switch between numbers and letters or letters and words in either ascending or descending order. Your client must develop strategies to remember the order in which to sequence the items while remembering which items they have already sequenced and avoiding the accidental mispairing of items.
