Packet #2

Executive Functioning

This packet is going to be one of the best packets to have in your collection of cognitive rehabilitation worksheets. With six different exercises, your client will perform activities in all areas of cognition. The first exercise will challenge their abilities to mentally move basketballs from one view to another with a Basketball in NY exercise. They will then have to solve some math problems with a Countdown exercise. Next, they must determine the time with a What Time is It exercise. A Decipher puzzle is waiting for them with a little break from math. They will return to a math exercise, but this one will have some logical reasoning as they have to determine the numerical value of a shape in the Shape Math exercise. The last two activities are simple. The first will challenge their visual-spatial ability by determining the rotation direction of a group of gears. The last exercise will stimulate their verbal language and ability to categorize random words in a Secret Files exercise. Social Cognition and Memory are the focus of this worksheet packet. This worksheet packet is packed full. 21 unique exercises span 38 pages in the packet. The key theme of this packet is emotions.

This packet will start by focusing on individuals and their emotions. Your patient must recognize emotions in each person’s face to correctly pick them out from the word box. Next, your patient will have to sort a list of emotional words alphabetically. This may help their memory recall emotion-based words in a normal sentence. After they review the bunches of emotional words, your patient will then have to memorize a list of emotions and find it in a mess of other emotions. This will use help to engage their verbal working memory. Lastly, your patient will have to do 3 different variations of root it out. The first is an unscrambled version. The second is a fill-in-the-missing letter. The last exercise is like the digital exercise Root it Out, except your patient must recall emotion-based words that start with a given letter.

From remembering people’s names and emotions to recalling emotional words, your patients will enjoy this packet. We recommend this packet for kids aged 8+ and individuals who want to work on their emotions.

The digital exercises that inspired this worksheet

Secret Files

This exercise primarily targets concentration, working memory, and executive functioning skills. These cognitive skills are heavily used when we are problem solving. Because your client must use some degree of trial and error, they must remember which attempts were successful as well as which ones were not. They must then devise strategies that help them remember the category of each drawer and what words correspond to each category. We use these skills when we have to organize items in our home in a way that makes them accessible to us and presentable.

Countdown

Using strategic planning, reasoning, and cognitive flexibility, your client must try to decipher how to arrive at a given solution using the given numbers, given operators, as well as the results of their steps to arrive at a specific solution. This exercise highly targets executive functioning, but also targets working memory by way of requiring your client to remember which numbers and operators they have used and keep track of unsuccessful attempts so as to avoid repeating the same mistakes. Your client must develop and implement strategies for effective planning while also practicing how to effectively solve problems using some degree of trial and error.

Decipher

Correctly pairing symbols with meaningful letters requires attention to detail, working memory, and the use of both grammar and context clues. Your client will have to use the help or given vowels or consonants, or attempt to solve the puzzle through trial and error. Using working memory, your client must identify which letters have been correctly paired and use the solved character-letter pairings to figure out the remaining unknown character-letter pairings.

Basketball in NY

Looking at the configuration of basketballs, your clients will have to mentally manipulate the basketballs into the correct hoops in as few moves as possible. Working memory and planning are challenged in this exercise, as clients must view the desired configuration and plan the most effective way to reach it. This exercise also helps with inhibition, as unplanned actions can cause more steps needed to solve the problem.
