Are you looking for verbal reasoning activities? Then look no further. Verbal reasoning is how we can understand complex sentences. As you read, your brain breaks apart the complexity into smaller and easy-to-digest. This packet is filled with exercises that may help to improve verbal reasoning skills.

The first exercise is based on the digital exercise, Hurray for Change. In this exercise, you must correctly sequence letters, words, and numbers alphabetically and numerically. We put this exercise first to help warm up your brain, as you will use these skills later in the packet. After this exercise, you will have three other verbal reasoning activities. We hope this packet will help you learn strategies to think critically by using the given information, process information effectively, and then take affirmative action.

This packet will be great for kids 8+, individuals who have had a stroke, or individuals who have aphasia. Additionally, individuals with executive functioning deficits, trouble processing verbal information, or anyone who wants to challenge their verbal reasoning skills may enjoy these activities as well.

Included inside: 22 worksheets and bridging questions.

The digital exercises that inspired this worksheet

Sound Check

This exercise calls upon attention and working memory. This exercise will also challenge your client’s capacity to recognize and discriminate different sounds. To get a baseline understanding of your client’s memory capacity, you may want to have them perform the Digit Span test.

Gulf Stream

In this exercise, your client must quickly scan a fish and compare to a target fish that they are required to identify. This exercise challenges your client’s visual attention, but also their visual working memory as they must remember what their target fish looks like while comparing the fish that is swimming across the screen. The strategies used in this activity translate to real-world situations such as quickly recognizing traffic signals and road signs.

Dancing with Fireflies

Have you tried to copy dance moves you see on TV? In this exercise, you will have to mentally connect the fireflies correctly to recognize the pattern that they are making. This exercise trains visual attention skills, working memory, and visual-spatial skills. Your client must learn strategies to examine information, make decisions using the details present, and arrive at an informed conclusion.

Sleight of Hands

Mental rotation is the main ability used in this exercise. This skill usually takes place in the right parietal region of the brain where perception occurs. Mental rotation comparison tasks can be broken down into five components: (1) create a mental representation of an object, (2) rotate the representation until a desired configuration is reached for comparison, (3) compare the rotated configuration , (4) decide if the representation and physical object are the same or not (5) report the decision and re perform these steps until correct solution is reached.
