This will use help to engage their verbal working memory. Lastly, your patient will have to do 3 different variations of root it out. The first is an unscrambled version. The second is a fill-in-the-missing letter. The last exercise is like the digital exercise Root it Out, except your patient must recall emotion-based words that start with a given letter.

From remembering people’s names and emotions to recalling emotional words, your patients will enjoy this packet. We recommend this packet for kids aged 8+ and individuals who want to work on their emotions.

The digital exercises that inspired this worksheet

Seize the Keywords

Retaining information for later use is important for remembering directions to desired locations, functioning in the workplace, completing homework on time, and for running errands. In this exercise, clients must memorize the key elements of a text in order to reconstruct the text in a logical manner. While challenging verbal memory, this exercise also challenges clients to practice the foundational skill of delayed recall.

Split Words

While highly verbal, this exercise also challenges working memory and spatial navigation. On a grid, your client must put together word fragments in order to create a logical word that pertains to a particular category. Your clients will practice deriving meaning from details, using context clues, and exploring space to collect relevant information. This exercise carries over to everyday tasks, such as reading an article or searching a web-page for relevant information.

Embroidery

Can you scan a space for relevant information? Using visual scanning and verbal memory, look at a matrix of random letters to find a hidden word pertaining to a theme. This can be done timed or untimed.

Decipher

Correctly pairing symbols with meaningful letters requires attention to detail, working memory, and the use of both grammar and context clues. Your client will have to use the help or given vowels or consonants, or attempt to solve the puzzle through trial and error. Using working memory, your client must identify which letters have been correctly paired and use the solved character-letter pairings to figure out the remaining unknown character-letter pairings.
