We designed this packet as a life skills activity workbook that may improve verbal working memory skills. This packet aims to challenge your client’s ability to remember, recall, and relocate words. Individuals in the food service industry often use these skills.

The first exercise will challenge your verbal memory as your patient combines fragments to make logical words. This progresses from easy two-fragment words to three-part fragmented words. In the next exercise, you must produce words with only a set letter or letter combo. After your verbal recall is warmed up, the second to last section will challenge your ability to place words within a grid. This will require you to use both verbal memory and spatial memory. Finally, the last exercise combines these skills into a real-world experience on printed paper. Working in a restaurant requires both verbal and spatial memory skills. These adapted Restaurant exercises will help you practice all the skills used in this packet as you recall names, orders, and positions.

This packet is great for individuals with learning disabilities, students eight years or older, or individuals recovering from a stroke. Try it as a bridging activity as well.

Included inside: 20 worksheets and bridging questions.

The digital exercises that inspired this worksheet

Find Your Way!

The skills called upon in this exercise are constantly used in our daily lives. For example, when we retrace our steps through the house to look for our keys, we must remember exactly where we were and how we got there. This exercise helps your client to learn strategies that may help improve their visual working memory and short-term memory skills.

Turn Around and Around

The ability to effectively manipulate objects mentally allows us to make decisions as to what an object is, where to place an object in space so that it does not fall, and helps us create a plan for how to navigate our environment. This task aims to train your client’s visual mental imagery skills, specifically their mental rotation abilities. Indeed, your client must visualize elements in a pattern, identify the surface patterns of 3-D objects, create a mental image of them, visualize their rotations, and make comparisons in order to decide whether the objects are the same or different.

An American in Paris

This exercise trains your clients working memory as well as their sequential abilities. Using images of landmarks combined with locations depicted using letters and numbers in a grid system. Practicing strategies to remember not only the image identity but also an images location can translate to everyday situations such as navigating a store or finding one’s location in space using landmarks like on a mall map.

Basketball in NY

Looking at the configuration of basketballs, your clients will have to mentally manipulate the basketballs into the correct hoops in as few moves as possible. Working memory and planning are challenged in this exercise, as clients must view the desired configuration and plan the most effective way to reach it. This exercise also helps with inhibition, as unplanned actions can cause more steps needed to solve the problem.
